Meet the Artist: KENECHI

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas

Step into NELEVEN: The Muses: Currency, a striking mixed media exploration of human value by Bahamian visual artist and designer Kenechi. Drawing from the historical use of the female figure in art as visual ornament, this work examines the ways people are reduced to symbols, surfaces, and commodities. Through silhouetted figures arranged in a triangular composition inspired by Gericault’s The Raft of the Medusa, Kenechi reflects on class, inequity, and society’s gradual surrender to superficiality and greed. By simplifying the body into shape and presence alone, she invites viewers to ask and answer the central question: What do you see? Kenechi is a multifaceted artist from The Bahamas whose educational path includes the Foundation Year Programme at King’s College University, a BA in Fine Art from Leeds Arts University, and a Master’s in Creative Direction from Polimoda in Florence. Her practice merges painting, design, and conceptual storytelling while engaging with social issues in The Bahamas, including sexism, homophobia, religious indoctrination, and structural inequity. Influenced by the Rorschach Test and the vivid colour language of the Caribbean, her work has been exhibited in The Bahamas, the United Kingdom, and Italy. Her designs were also featured in Fendi’s Spring Summer twenty three Couture Collection. Watch as she shares the ideas, inspirations, and cultural questions behind The Muses: Currency in this NELEVEN artist feature.
